Faith & Advocacy Network (FAN) Wraps a Busy Year, Prepares for 2023

As we all work in faith to follow in the footsteps of Jesus and take action to change the world around us, we are very excited to share that FAN had a busy year as we returned to in person activities. Below are some highlights of the things we accomplished. Thanks to those involved for helping us make an impact in our community and for those who have not yet, we encourage you to join us in the future. This year, we furthered our mission of supporting the community ministries of St. Luke’s by educating the congregation and advocating for policies that affect those we serve, working often in partnership with Ebenezer Baptist Church & The Temple.
January: Reverend and Senator Kim Jackson & Representative Mary Margaret Oliver provided a legislative preview for 2022
February: Approved budgets for each FAN focus areas
March: Held a Men Against Sex Trafficking event and in partnership Ebenezer Baptist Church and the Temple
March: Economic Equity Initiative (a partnership with Ebenezer) toured Focus Built Communities
May: Offered two forums on environmental issues featuring Dr. Kim Cobb, Georgia Tech Professor of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and Dr. Mark Douglas, Columbia Theological Seminary Professor of Christian Ethics
May: Brought issues of Mass Incarceration to the parish witha performance of “CALF” by Out of Hand followed by a talk back forum with Georgia Justice Project’s Doug Ammar
May: Facilitated a Souls to the Polls panel with Ebenezer Baptist & The Temple
June: Commemorated victims of gun violence at our Wear Orange church service and in partnership with the Temple’s Rothschild Social Justice Institute and Ebenezer Baptist Church, we hosted a luncheon and forum on gun violence. The event featured Lisa Hagen, Pulitzer Prize-winning WABE journalist for an investigative podcast series that explores the Second Amendment in America called “No Compromise.”
August: Convened an interfaith group to address gun violence prevention (that arose from the Wear Orange event)
September: Facilitated a book study for You Shall Not Condemn
October: Hosted Georgia Interfaith Power & Light’s (GIPL’s) Faith, Climate, Justice Voter Lunch ‘n Learn and celebrated St. Francis’ legacy with Maggie Fox, Co-founder of Global Diversity Project, and Cody Norred, GIPL Executive Director
November: Promoted activities to help people in our community cast their votes, provided resources for informed voting, and helped conduct poll observation in collaboration with the Carter Center
But our work is far from completed, and we need you! As you know, there is a very important run-off for the US Senate in Georgia. Once again both the Carter Center and your political party need people to observe the voting process. And it goes without saying that you need to join the effort to Get Out The Vote by voting and making sure that all your friends and family go to the polls by December 6, 2022.
Next year please keep an eye out for impactful ways to learn and make a difference in our community. We will kick off the year by holding another legislative preview at FAN’s January meeting on Sunday, Jan. 8th. That will be quickly followed by January 11-13th Conference, ‘Let My People Go, A New Day’, at Ebenezer Baptist Church by Ending Mass Incarceration (EMI).
FAN spotlights help spread awareness about the social justice causes supported by St. Luke’s that are among our Faith & Advocacy Network team focus areas. They highlight ways that we can live a Jesus-centered life by educating ourselves about issues in our community and steps we can take to make a difference. The way of love is a way of life.
