The name of the book, Backwards and Forwards,
checked out of the library of the school that is closing.
The book tells me how to read plays,
how to read stories for conflict and tension and development of character.
It sits on the desk, forgotten
while around me I hear chickens and the hum of a heater and a few birds
while I try not to cry.
Sometimes there is no better response
to your own children who struggle
to bats in the attic
and broken cars and appliances
and broken systems that can’t take care of people
and abandoned schools.
Tomorrow I will take the Eucharist virtually. Except that I will drink the wine in my kitchen, probably a large gulp for 10am, and I will try to pray.
Today's prayer comes to us from Mary Lynn Owen.
