Funerals at St. Luke’s

The death of a loved one is a painful time when we support one another in our grief. It is also a joyous time when we celebrate the promise of eternal life in Jesus Christ.

The clergy, music department, and staff at St. Luke’s will work with you in arranging a meaningful funeral for your loved one. At St. Luke’s, the service for a funeral is taken from the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer.  The service performed is called The Burial of the Dead.  It has two forms in the Prayer Book - either Rite One, which begins on page 469, or Rite Two, which begins on page 491. The litugy for the dead is an Easter liturgy.  It finds all its meaning in the resurrection.  Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we, too, shall be raised. The liturgy, therefore, is characterized by joy, in the certainty that nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.  This joy, however, does not make human grief unchristian.  The very love we have for each other in Christ brings deep sorrrow when we are parted by death.  Jesus himself wept at the grave of his friend.  So, while we rejoice that one we love has entered into the nearer presence of our Lord, we sorrow in sympathy with those who mourn.

For more information or to arrange a funeral, please contact Beth Elliott at 404.8737610.

But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never
die again; death no longer has dominion over him. The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.
So you must also consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ.  Romans 6: 8-11
