Acolyte Sign Up ...Even though it’s still summer vacation, we’re actively getting ready for the upcoming program year and will be putting our acolyte teams together in the coming weeks. We are looking for returning acolytes AND new folks - youth and adults - to join our fearless ranks. (Youth in sixth grade and older are eligible to serve.) To register, please go onto our website and fill out the Acolyte Registration Form no later than the end of the day on Monday, August 14. Captains training is Sunday, Aug. 20 at 10 a.m. and Acolyte training is Sunday, Aug. 27 from 12:30 - 2 p.m.
Fill the Outreach Baskets ... In August we’re filling the baskets with new and gently-used backpacks for Crossroads. Many people who are homeless put everything they own into a bag and carry it with them everywhere they go. As you are preparing to send children back to school and have gently used backpacks or can pick up an extra one while you are doing your back-to-school shopping, it will really help lighten someone’s load! All sizes are needed. Please place your donations in the Outreach baskets located in the Narthex and Reception Area.
Holy Comforter Supper ... All are welcome to join us at Holy Comforter to serve dinner Wednesday, August 16 at 6 p.m. This month we will also celebrate the ministry of Barry Bynum and Ken Cribbs as they pass the leadership baton to David Davis and Connie Wooten. Holy Comforter is a parish in Ormewood Park in which about 60% of the congregation live with mental illness. In support of the work of the parish, St. Luke’s serves dinner one Wednesday most months. Screening of “13th” ... All are invited to St. Luke’s on Sunday, August 20 at 5 p.m. in the Parish Hall to watch and discuss the ground-breaking film, “13th,” an in-depth look at the prison system in the United States and how it reveals our nation’s history of racial inequality. Habitat for Humanity ... Calling all handy Habitat helpers! Habitat for Humanity is inviting us to join in two Interfaith Build Days this fall. St. Luke’s on the Big Screen at Suntrust Park ... Come one, come all! We are looking for excited singers of any age (from 0-99!) and any experience level to join us Wednesday, September 6 at 6:45 p.m. in the Church to sing (and video record) the National Anthem to submit to the Braves! No prior choir experience is required; just energy, your presence, and any Braves gear that you might have! Summer Choir ... Members of the congregation (high school age and above), friends, and visitors are all cordially invited to sing as part of the choir without a long-term commitment. No advance sign-up is required but you must attend the rehearsal on Sunday one hour before service time in the Choir Room. The Atlanta Regional Housing Forum, which meets quarterly at St. Luke’s, is hosting an Atlanta Mayoral Candidate Forum at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 6. Come hear all the candidates talk about important issues facing our community. Booth Western Museum Visit & Lunch

Join your fellow Sojourners on a road trip to nearby Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville, GA. The museum is the largest permanent exhibition space for Western art in the US. Current exhibits include Ansel Adams, Painting Red Rocks Country and the Native Hands. After touring the museum we will gather for lunch in Cartersville before heading back to Atlanta. The Grief Support Group ... begins a 3-part Journey Through Grief on August 17 at noon in the Library. These sessions will incorporate mindfulness practices as tools to welcome and experience the present moment in order to navigate through the grief process. Other sessions are on September 21 and October 19. All are invited and there is no cost, but space is limited. Wednesday Bible Study ... resumes this fall on September 6 at 11 a.m. with a focus on Romans. We will delve into theology in the making as Paul wrestles with enduring issues: justification and grace, sin and salvation, a vision of unity, and the faithfulness of God—the same issues that believers have contemplated throughout the history of the church. This study of Romans is particularly timely, as we observe the upcoming 500th anniversary of the Reformation, 1517-2017. We will talk about the role that Paul’s letter played in the life of reformer Martin Luther and the events surrounding the Reformation. All are welcome!
Learning Mindfulness Group ... Matt Wagner, LPC and therapist at TACC, is facilitating another six-week group focused on the practice of mindfulness. The group is tentatively scheduled to meet Wednesday evenings at TACC from 7-8:30 p.m., starting Sept. 13. Participants must be at least 18.
