Baptism

Baptism is one of the fundamental sacraments of the Christian faith. It uses water to signify the entrance of the individual into the Christian faith and church community.

At St. Luke’s, we hold our services of baptism on Sunday morning, in the presence of the gathered parish family. The service follows the baptism service in the Book of Common Prayer, which begins on page 299. We offer baptism by effusion, which is another name for pouring.  During the baptism service, the officiating clergy pours water on the head of the person being baptized.

In order to prepare for baptism, we ask that adults and older children seeking to be baptized, the parents of children to be baptized, and sponsors or godparents of candidates, attend our Baptism Preparation Class on the Saturday immediately preceding the baptism.

For in Christ Jesus, you are all children of God through faith.
As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free,
there is no longer male or female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.

- Galatians 3: 26-28.
